Choosing a Dog Bed Setup: Start With How Your Dog Sleeps

25+ years designing and manufacturing pet products · Our Editorial Process
There are hundreds of dog beds to choose from. Flat beds. Bolster beds. Memory foam beds. Washable beds. Waterproof beds. Orthopedic beds.
But after more than 25 years designing and manufacturing pet products, I've learned that choosing the right dog bed shouldn't start with the style of the bed.
It should start with the dog.
How does your dog sleep? Do they stretch out or curl up? Do they always find something to rest their head on? Are they a puppy, an active adult, or a senior whose comfort needs are beginning to change?
Then there is the part people don't always think about when buying a new bed: what happens after months and years of real life.
Wet paws. Mud. Drool. Accidents. Digging. Washing. And thousands of hours spent sleeping in the same spot.
A good dog bed setup needs to account for all of it.
At Black Lab, we approach dog beds differently. Start with a supportive, waterproof orthopedic foundation. Protect it. Then build the comfort around the dog who sleeps on it.
Start With the Most Important Part: The Mattress

I've designed dog beds for years, and one principle has become increasingly important to me:
The mattress is the part worth protecting.
Covers can be washed. Covers can be replaced. Pillows and bolsters can be changed.
But the foam mattress is typically the most important and expensive component of a dog bed. It's also the part responsible for providing long-term support.
Once foam becomes saturated, contaminated, damaged, or permanently compressed, replacing a cover doesn't solve the problem.
That's why the first thing I look at in any dog bed is what's underneath the fabric.
A supportive orthopedic foam mattress should provide a stable sleeping surface and distribute the dog's weight without allowing them to simply sink through the bed and rest against the floor.
This becomes especially relevant with larger dogs, dogs that spend a lot of time resting, and older dogs whose comfort and mobility needs may be changing.
A dog bed isn't a treatment for arthritis, hip dysplasia, or another medical condition. But dogs spend a significant amount of their lives sleeping and resting, so the surface they're lying on matters.
If the Mattress Matters Most, Protect the Mattress
This seems obvious, but it's an area where dog beds are constructed very differently.
Dogs introduce moisture into their beds in all kinds of ways:
Wet coats. Damp paws. Drool. Spills. Puppy accidents. Mud. And, for some older dogs, occasional incontinence.
That's why you'll see terms like water-resistant and waterproof used frequently when shopping for dog beds.
They're not necessarily the same thing.
Water-resistant materials are generally intended to resist or slow moisture penetration.
A waterproof barrier is intended to prevent water from passing through it.
But there's another detail that years of product development taught me to pay attention to:
Seams.
A material itself can be waterproof while the finished product still has potential entry points for moisture. If pieces of waterproof material are joined with conventional stitching, every needle penetration creates a potential path through that material.
This is one of the problems we set out to solve when developing Black Lab's Fused Core™ waterproof orthopedic mattress.
Rather than placing orthopedic foam inside a conventional sewn fabric liner, we surround the foam with a waterproof shell and heat-weld the seams.

The objective is straightforward:
Protect the foam itself.
That's why our approach to waterproofing isn't primarily about keeping the floor underneath the bed dry. It's about protecting the most important and expensive component of the dog bed.
What Does “Waterproof Orthopedic Dog Bed” Actually Mean?
If you're searching for a waterproof orthopedic dog bed, it's worth looking beyond those words in the product description.
Ask a few additional questions.
Where is the waterproof barrier?
Does it actually surround the foam?
Are the seams sewn or welded?
What happens if liquid gets through the decorative outer cover?
Can the mattress itself be cleaned?
And what does “orthopedic” refer to in the construction of the bed?
These questions tell you considerably more about a bed than the words printed on the package.
At Black Lab, we separate the jobs.
The foam provides support.
Fused Core™ protects the foam from moisture.
The quilted layer adds comfort.
The removable outer cover handles everyday wear and washing.
The add-ons provide customized comfort.
Separating those functions also means we can change what's around the mattress without having to replace the mattress itself.
Next, Watch How Your Dog Actually Sleeps

Once you've chosen the foundation, pay attention to your dog.
Dogs are pretty good at showing us what they want from a sleeping space.
The Sprawler
Some dogs want every available inch.
They sleep on their sides, extend their legs, change positions constantly, and somehow manage to make themselves look considerably longer asleep than they do standing up.
For these dogs, an open rectangular sleeping surface gives them room to move without forcing them into a particular position.
This is where our Signature Bed starts.
It combines the waterproof orthopedic Fused Core™ mattress with a comfortable quilted layer and removable, washable outer cover while leaving the sleeping surface open.
When choosing a size, don't only consider your dog's standing length. Think about how much space they occupy when they're completely stretched out.
The Head-Rester
Then there are dogs that seem determined to turn everything into a pillow.
The arm of the couch.
A blanket.
Your leg.
Another dog.
If your dog consistently seeks an elevated place to rest their head, that behavior can help determine their bed setup.
Our Signature Pillow uses the same underlying waterproof orthopedic mattress but adds a separate headrest.
The dog still has an open sleeping surface and can use the pillow when they want it.
The Curler and Leaner
Other dogs naturally curl, nest, or sleep pressed against something.
They may choose the corner of the couch or push themselves against a pile of pillows even when there's an entire open surface available.
These dogs may prefer a bed with surrounding structure.
Our Signature Bolster adds supportive bolsters around the sleeping surface, creating places for a dog to curl against, lean into, or use as a headrest.
The important point isn't that every curling dog needs a bolster.
It's that your dog's existing sleeping behavior is one of the best clues you have when choosing a bed configuration.
The Adventure Dog
Not every dog bed stays in the living room.
Some beds need to work in crates, vehicles, cabins, patios, training facilities, or campsites. Some dogs are simply wet, muddy, active dogs.
That's where a simpler setup can make more sense.
Our Utility All-Weather Bed is essentially the Fused Core™ waterproof orthopedic mattress in its most basic configuration.
There's no upholstered outer cover required.
It can be wiped down, rinsed, or hosed clean, making it useful anywhere easy cleanup matters.

And because that same Fused Core™ mattress is the foundation of our Signature system, the mattress isn't limited to one role.
Your Dog's Bed Doesn't Have to Stay the Same
This is one of the ideas that eventually led me back to designing dog beds.
Most dog beds are sold as finished products.
You choose a style, color, and size. That's the bed until something wears out, your dog's needs change, or you replace it.
But dogs don't stay the same.
A young dog may happily sprawl across a flat mattress.
Years later, that same dog may prefer something to lean against or somewhere to rest their head.
Your home changes.
Covers wear.
Dogs age.
And sometimes you simply learn more about how your dog prefers to sleep.
I don't think those changes should automatically mean replacing the entire bed.
That's why Black Lab beds are designed around a different idea:
Protect the foundation. Change what surrounds it.

Start with the waterproof orthopedic mattress.
Add the comfort layer and cover you want.
Add a pillow or bolster when it makes sense.
Replace a worn cover instead of the entire bed.
Change the configuration as your dog's needs change.
The goal isn't to predict exactly what your dog will need for the rest of their life.
It's to start with a foundation worth keeping.
What About Senior Dogs?
A dog's sleeping habits and mobility can change significantly with age.
Senior dogs may sleep more, change positions more frequently, become less comfortable on hard surfaces, or have more difficulty getting onto furniture they previously used without hesitation.
A supportive sleeping surface can provide a comfortable place to rest, while the height and accessibility of the bed can become increasingly important as mobility changes.
This is another reason I prefer an adaptable approach to dog bed design.
The mattress that worked for an adult dog may still provide the foundation they need years later, while the comfort setup around it changes.
It's also important not to assume that a bed is the solution to a sudden change in behavior.
If your dog suddenly becomes reluctant to stand, jump, climb stairs, lie down, or get comfortable, talk with your veterinarian. Changes in mobility or sleeping behavior can be signs of an underlying medical issue.
Think About Cleaning Before the Bed Gets Dirty
One of the best times to think about cleaning a dog bed is before you buy it.
Ask:
-
Can I remove the outer cover?
-
Can I machine wash it?
-
What happens if moisture gets through the cover?
-
Can I clean the mattress itself?
-
Can I replace individual components?
-
What happens after the cover has been washed dozens of times?
We designed Black Lab Signature beds so different layers handle different jobs.
The removable outer cover handles everyday wear and can be washed.
Our StayFresh™ technology is incorporated into the cover to help control odor-causing bacteria between washes.
Underneath is the Fused Core™ waterproof mattress.
If something gets through the outer layers, you're not relying on absorbent foam as the final line of defense.
That separation is intentional.
Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant: Look Beneath the Cover
When you're comparing beds, don't stop at the outer fabric.
A water-resistant cover can be extremely useful for everyday moisture and spills.
But if your priority is protecting the orthopedic foam, determine what's underneath it.
If the outer cover becomes saturated, what happens next?
Is there another protective layer?
Does that layer completely surround the mattress?
How are its seams constructed?
Can you clean it?
Those details help determine whether you're looking at a bed with a water-resistant cover or a truly protected waterproof mattress.
For Black Lab, waterproofing is not primarily a surface feature.
It's part of the mattress construction.
How to Choose Your Black Lab Setup
If you're trying to decide among our beds, start with your dog's behavior rather than the product names.
Utility All-Weather Bed
Consider Utility when easy cleanup and waterproof performance are the priorities. It's particularly useful for crates, vehicles, travel, outdoor environments, wet dogs, muddy dogs, and anywhere you want the simplest version of our waterproof orthopedic foundation.
Signature Bed
Consider Signature for a dog that likes an open sleeping surface and plenty of room to stretch out. It adds an upholstered, washable comfort system around the Fused Core™ foundation.
Signature Pillow
Consider Signature Pillow if your dog likes an open bed but consistently looks for somewhere elevated to rest their head.
Signature Bolster
Consider Signature Bolster if your dog curls, nests, leans against furniture, or likes sleeping with something around them.
These aren't rules.
They're starting points based on observing how your dog already chooses to sleep.
A Different Way to Think About Buying a Dog Bed
After decades designing and manufacturing pet products, I don't think choosing a dog bed should come down to finding the one with the longest list of features.
Start with the parts that matter most.
Is the mattress supportive?
Is the foam protected?
Can the bed be cleaned?
Can worn components be replaced?
Does the setup match how your dog actually sleeps?
Can it change if your dog's needs change?
Those questions led us to the way we build beds at Black Lab.
The supportive foam mattress is the foundation.
Fused Core™ protects it.
The washable layers handle everyday life.
Pillows and bolsters let the sleeping environment change.
And replaceable components mean a worn cover doesn't necessarily mean replacing an otherwise perfectly good bed.
A dog may spend thousands of hours sleeping on the same mattress.
We think that makes the mattress worth protecting.
Protect what matters most. Build the rest around your dog.
